A Spammy Boost to my Blogger Confidence

I often forget about my spam comments section. The place in space where the weird robot comments go waiting for me to delete or approve. The limbo of the comment world.

I know they're totally fake and potentially hazardous to my computer, but they sure are sweet!

"I just noticed iamalongfortheride.blogspot.com by searching online, and found it is so sweet. Keep up the great work!"

"I couldn’t have asked for a better blog. You happen to be always at hand to offer excellent guidance, going straight away to the point for easy understanding of your site visitors. You’re really a terrific pro in this subject matter."

"I have to say, while looking through hundreds of blogs daily, the theme of this blog is different (for all the proper reasons). If you do not mind me asking, what’s the name of this theme or would it be a especially designed affair? It’s significantly better compared to the themes I use for some of my blogs."

"I am really satisfied with this posting that you have given us. This is really a stupendous work done by you."

"Me gusta esta idea, por completo con Ud soy conforme" (loosely translated to "I like this idea, I'm completely with you")

On Journaling: How to Pick a Journal

A few weeks ago I shared the story of why I journal.

Since starting my journal journey back in elementary school, I've had a good many journals.

Some plain.  Some artistic.
Some simple. Some elaborate.
Some large. Some little.

Once blank and full of potential. Now filled and complete with mistakes and memories. With dreams and answered prayers.

There is nothing like the promise of a new journal. The grip of the clean pages. They draw you in, and with the very first swipe of the pen, are uniquely you.

Here are a few things to consider when picking a journal.

Are you a perfectionist or do you embrace your mistakes?
If you are a perfectionist and can see yourself wanting to disgard any prose that aren't quite perfect, consider a journal with easy-to-tear-out pages (such as a spiral journal). The more pages you tear out of a more intricately bound book, the more likely your journal pages might begin to fall out on their own. I tend to use my journal for all kinds of things (grocery lists, to-do lists, lists and lists) so it's important that I can tear out those pages and go.

Pen or pencil?
For me, a journal, in all its beauty and mess, is permanent. I am my mistakes so I like to write in pen and just let it roll, crossing things out if they're not quite write. I love to see the progression of my writing as I search for just the right word. But if you are using a journal as a calendar as well or you just prefer to be more fine tuned, a pencil might be perfect for you.

A few things to consider. Pencil, although easily changed, can rub off on other pages as you work through the book. You might go back to read pages from a few months ago only to find that they have rubbed themselves unreadable.

I like to use a gel pen for optimal speed and smoothness. However, if I get too quick or get lazy with my pinky, it smudges everywhere.

Where will you write?
This might sound silly, but this is a big factor for me in choosing my next journal. During college I would lie lazily on stomach in bed penning poetry and I loved when I could fold my journal over itself (like a spiral bound or one with a floppy cover). Now I use my journal a lot for writing in church and small group (or while sitting at a table) so a hardbound book is perfect.

What will you write?
Well, maybe you don't plan to write at all. Maybe your journal is for your doodles and drawings. Then a sketch book it is! If you're like me in my Harriet the Spy Days then a wide ruled book's for you. These days it's easy for my handwriting to be really floppy and swoopy so I like to write in college ruled journals with the thinner lines to kind of restrain my letters from going all the way back to kindergarten. If you're like my husband, then you love graph paper- something about all those boxes just begging to be filled. I've also seen some composition notebooks that are blank on the top of the page and ruled at the bottom. The best of both worlds!

What's your attention span?
Confession, I get bored really easily. Same old same old and after a while I need a change. Whenever I have had really thick journals, after a while I would want a new one leaving blank pages left hanging at the end. So now I skip the giant novel-sized journals and opt for the skinnier books so that as soon as I get bored with the cover or the paper color or texture, bam it's time to pick out a new one!

What's your style?
There are so many beautiful journals out there just begging to be black or blue with ink! I love the little journals you can find in the Michaels discount bin for just a buck. Perfect for tossing in my purse. I found my current journal at my local Christian Bookstore. Here are some other spots to check out:

Starting a journal is like beginning a new chapter. As our days unfold, the pages wait to hear the stories that we share.

I love thumbing through an old journal and seeing words pop out here and there.

(from mine: spiritual, arise, strengthen, Jesus, humble)

Are you new to the idea of journaling? Picking out a journal for the first time? I'd love to see what you chose!

On Journaling: Meredith's Story

Hey! I'm Meredith and I blog over at yours, mine & ours and I'm a journal keeper.

I've been keeping my own journal for a while (thank you teenage angst for making me write all my feelings down. I got hooked!) and even started a journal full of letters to my son when I was pregnant with him. I keep adding to it every few weeks as he learns new words, does something funny, or I just have to write down how much we adore him. Because I've been writing little things here and there since he was just a little nugget, I remember so much more! I need all the help I can get in the memory department. :)

I just use 99 cent notebooks to journal in. Sometimes I embellish the front and sometimes I just go to work filling the pages.

"Dear B,
You are such a rock star napper: 3 to 4 hours every afternoon!! Thank you little nugget. I appreciate it big time.
Love, Yo Mama!"

I love being able to look back at what I was thinking and feeling years ago and I hope my little boy enjoys his book later on too.

Thanks, Meredith, for sharing your journal story! Do you have a story to share? I'd love to feature a few folks and why they journal. Email me at iamalongfortheride @ gmail . com.

Thankful

I often feel like this. The Lord has blessed me in ways that I will never undersand.

And most of the time I don't love it enough. I don't thank Him enough.

Today, as I spend time with my family, those that mean the most to me, I reflect on all His blessings, seen and unseen.

My home, health, husband, family, friends, career, talents, gifts.

Lord, thank you. I will try to spend my time on earth in a way that glorifies You and use what you have given me to serve others.

I'm "Blank" Because

This idea came from  Little Miss Momma (and I've seen it on lots of other blogs since).
I thought I'd jump on the bandwagon as well- with a few additional categories.

I'm weird because...
I have the strongest sense of smell ever.
I hate wearing socks.
Lately I've been sleeping with 7 layers on my side of the bed

I'm awesome because...
I have sweet glasses.
I can play the piano (although it's been a while).
I'm cozy (according to my husband that's the word that best describes me...best compliment ever).

I'm a bad friend because...
I hardly ever call.
I hardly ever return phone calls.
I moved so far away.

I'm a good friend because...
I would give my friends anything I had.
I listen.
I ask how I can help.

I'm a bad wife because...
I'm not very patient.
I hate to cook.
I don't always listen when Kyle talks about nerdy things to me.

I'm a good wife because...
I do all the other chores in the house (some more cheerfully than others).
When my hubby holds out his hand for me to dance with him around the kitchen, I usually do.
I am relying on the Lord (I owe all my good stuff to Him).

I'm sad because...
My family lives so far away.
My husband is stressed about finishing school and finding a job.
So many are without homes/family/food for Thanksgiving.

I'm happy because...
My parents come to town today.
I am on a much needed break from work this week.
My favorite holiday is just a few days away.

Praying for Each Other

Jen: I’m struggling with figuring out financially how I’llkeep my son in college.  Things are so tough financially, we’rerecovering from a company closure that caused my husband to lose his job. He’s got a new job, but you know the deal.  Playing catch up! I’m one of millions right now and feel selfish for asking for prayers, but it’s bringing me down mentally now too.

Jessica: My grampa is in the hospital with critical pneumonia. He's 83 years old. One of his lungs in pretty filled right now, and he is expected to stay in the hospital for about 2 weeks. The hardest part for me is that I live all the way in Canada, and he's in California along with the rest of my family. I wish I could be there and sit with him. Yesterday I called the hospital to talk with his nurse and she said he was doing much better, and out of ICU into his own normal room... he was even shaving too! But today my mom says he didn't look so good. My husband and I are going home to California for Christmas.. I'm praying and hoping that I will get to see my Grampa too. I've been away for two years since we got married in 09. Would appreciate prayers for him.
How can we pray for you?

Ever Grateful

As I run around each week, hurrying to one thing or the next, it's so easy to lose sight and lose perspective of the blessings our Father has given me.
My husband
A warm (rent free) home
My job
My family and friends
[just the beginning of a truely endless list]
I was given the opportunity to review a product with Dayspring this month. I was given the Forever Grateful Apron (which is half off this week!)

I'm looking forward to my parents flying in tomorrow and for my husband and I to host our first Thanksgiving. I will be wearing my apron as a happy hostess and reflecing on why this really is my favorite holiday.

I have found always found Dayspring products to be well-made, durable, and beautiful .The apron is no excpetion.

And these at these other beautiful items in their "ever grateful" collection!

I'm excited for the memories that will be made this Thanksgiving and ever grateful for all the Thanksgivings to come!

*I recieved a free product from Dayspring in exchange for a product review. However, the opinions and thoughts stated here are  my own.*
